An Interesting Approach to Residential Architecture: Dalene Cabin in Norway Posted: 23 Feb 2011 05:51 AM PST Delen Cabin was designed by architect Tommie Wilhelmsen and is located in Østhusvik, Rennesøy island, Norway. This project was developed under the motto: “Good architecture is a place that its never easy to leave”. Its total surface is 120 square meters, which makes it perfect for a comfortable nature family retreat. The architecture of the residence is original and intriguing, featuring unexpected angles and curves. The association of wood, glass and rock creates great visual effects. The consequences- an appealing exterior design, interesting to observe in detail from every corner of the construction site. Once inside, the guest is welcomed by a unique mix of wood and concrete which, surprisingly, manages to create a cozy living area. The sober color palette and the minimalist furniture create an interesting ambiance and complete the otherwise traditional decor.

Creative Renovation Unveiling a Contemporary Residence in Sydney Posted: 23 Feb 2011 01:56 AM PST The Vader House is a strong visual concept built on 120 sqm in Sydney, Australia. Designed by Andrew Maynard Architects, the residence that rises in the middle of the city is an extension to a Victorian terrace that has high boundary masonry walls delimitating the property. The fact that the house was constructed long before new building regulations were established allows it to have a non-standard height along the northern boundary. The raised roof falls abruptly to meet the height building requirements. With a budget of $500,000, the architects managed to recreate the charm of the old building by adding a steel structure that supports the building and leaving part of the property untouched. A spacious interior was thus created, fully taking advantage of the double height ceilings. A mezzanine level filled with light from the large windows looks out on the interior courtyard. Playful combinations of colours and materials create a colourful and surprising palette, with accents created by the masonry walls of the old structure visible in the kitchen. The master bedroom with en-suite rests at the second floor and a spa unveils itself from under the retractable wooden deck of the courtyard.

An Elegant Approach to the Monobloc: The Bench Chair Posted: 23 Feb 2011 12:25 AM PST Said to be the world’s most famous chair, the monobloc (in its pure form) is a plastic seating item, very easy to move from place to place due to its light weight and often used as an outdoor furniture piece. This Bench Chair was by Thomas Schnur and derives from the design mentioned above: Obviously, the Bench Chair nourishes the famous monobloc chair. It responds to the associations, which causes each chair, in a new context. Its curved shape is distorted to a voluminous body and thus forms an abstract space. The viewer is confronted with a transformed hybrid. Its preparation is as simple as that of the monobloc: using rotational molding process, the Bench Chair are produced serially. Found on Today&Tomorrow, the Bench Chair has a highly original appearance and is slightly more elegant than its inspirations source.

Creative and Vibrant Fine Arts Center in Texas Posted: 22 Feb 2011 08:26 AM PST This incredibly original Fine Arts Center in Edcouch-Elsa, Texas was designed by Kell Muñoz Architects and occupies an area of 31,000 sq. ft. According to the architects, the brief was to create a building that would reflect the community’s history, heritage, hopes and aspirations. From various focus group sessions and working in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution, Kell Muñoz Architects researched the rich “corrido” tradition of this part of the border. Inspired by the patterns of sound waves of specific, important corridos, The Corrido of Edcouch-Elsa is an attempt to tell the story of artistic achievement and cultural negotiation in a community that is woven together in a very unique manner. It blurs the line between architecture and folkloric tradition in a “Mestizo Fashion” that is symbolic of the country’s demographic shift. We salute the unusual appearance of this project found on Arch Daily, which is both a community symbol, as well as a tribute to modern art and architecture.
