Drilling Thousands of Screws for Unusual 3D Mural Portraits Posted: 28 Feb 2011 07:06 AM PST With the help of thousands of screws, Andrew Myres, a 31-year-old artist from Orange County, California, manages to mind-blowing portraits. According to Etsicommunication, the idea struck Andrew while working in a church a few years back: “I was doing bronze reliefs depicting the life of Saint Catherine and thought how cool would it be to create something entirely out of screws. I'd always wanted to work with screws, I got the idea and that was it. Six months later I completed my first piece.” The portraits are made by drilling screws into wood and some of them are are 1.2m (4ft). Even though the artist managed to sell five works for for £5,500, he says what he does is not measurable in material rewards: “Household screws are cheap if you need to hang a few pictures but when you need to buy tens of thousands of them the price soon adds up. This kind of art is unique enough that I have to keep going with it, but it costs so much to create each piece it's not as financially rewarding as you may think. They are more a labour of love.”

Fun Planters Displaying Familiar Faces from Good Studio: The Facepot Posted: 28 Feb 2011 06:01 AM PST These original planters are a beautiful and personalized way of displaying family photos in new and green way. The Facepot by Good Studio is a collection of different sized planters with an intriguing idea attached: the graphic techniques used in advertising campaigns can be applied to decorative objects. Using flowers and plants similar to the person’s face shape, Good studio created these amazing facepots which have the plants elegantly covering the edge of the pots, creating a fun and funny final result. Both live plants and artificial ones can be used to create the decorative planters. The plant is secured in a normal pot, then it is inserted in a basic, white pot which is adorned with the familiar face of your choosing, printed on paper. The final layer is a protective, transparent plastic pot that will keep the design safe from external factors. Have fun with these creative planters and don’t forget to proudly display them for your guests to see as soon as they walk in the door.
