Founder of Dwell Magazine Reveals Her Mesmerising Family Home Posted: 11 Mar 2011 07:36 AM PST Lara Hedberg Deam, the founder of architecture and design magazine Dwell is the owner of this magnificent home located in Mill Valley, California. Recently renovated by her husband, architect Chris Deam, the house has a fresh and inviting feel, not to mention an impeccable modern design. First of all, the crib had to be adapted to the needs of a growing family: Lara, Chris and their two beautiful children: We wanted to carve out space for the individuals—for Lara's home office, for me to have a place to work, for each of the kids, for a smaller room where we could watch TV and have family time, and for more space to entertain- says Chris. The home plans were eventually developed accordingly while also creating a strong indoor-outdoor connection. An interesting element you may observe is the door which opens towards the backyard: The door weighs about 2,000 pounds (907 kilos), and it has its own foundation under the pivot point. In the first concept sketches it was really thin and elegant, but it just kept growing and growing and eventually the diagonal brace showed up—in the end, why not let the engineering show? Enjoy the photos and let yourself be inspired by this fresh and mesmerizing family home! (Photos by: Dustin Aksland)

Bright Residence Near Water in the Stockholm Archipelago Posted: 11 Mar 2011 03:56 AM PST Residences built near water seem to draw a vivid lifestyle from the surroundings. Built to have as much access to water as possible, this next house has an amazing location in the Stockholm archipelago. Resting in a private area in the Swedish Värmdö municipality, the interior and exterior design of the residence is based on light, modern features and awesome accents. Large entertaining areas both inside and outside create the perfect setting for a relaxing afternoon accompanied by friends and family. Predominantly white, the walls bounce light around to create a bright atmosphere, accentuated by details like the stone fireplaces and walls and the dark seating facilities. The bedroom conveys a feeling of total surrender to the beautiful landscape with the incorporated spa and large glass walls. For sale at Eklund Stockholm New York, the residence beneficiates from both a great interior living space and a select placement in the archipelago.

Modern White Residence Which Seems to Rise from Water: Carrara House Posted: 11 Mar 2011 12:24 AM PST Carrara House was designed by Andres Remy Arquitectos and is located in Pilar, Buenos Aires, Argentina. With a living space of 660 square meters, the home is located on an irregular lot and oriented so it could capture the best views its environment has to offer. According to Arch Daily, the rustic stone works as a divider of the entry zones while beautifully contrasting with the white walls of the house. Here is more from the architects: A blind and evocative entrance makes a strong impression on the house. The white of the carrara marble dominates the interior architecture. With the white walls and ceilings, the house appears to arise from within the water. The touches of color are used for small details and decorative objects, dominating the white color and the turquoise of the water. Emerging from the hall dispenser of the top floor, the glass cascade drains musically into and through the heart of the ground floor. (Photos by © Alejandro Peral)

Innovative Conversion: 1931 Water Tower Turned into Modern Apartment Posted: 10 Mar 2011 07:41 AM PST We’ve seen a large variety of unconventional homes on Freshome, but this is a first. Zecc Architects managed the impossible: converting a 1931 water tower in Soest, The Netherlands into a contemporary home with no less than nine levels. As you probably already imagined, many challenges came with this uncommon “home renovation”. According to I New Idea, light was the main issue, as the tower only had a few small windows. The solution? Inserting a three-level high window which lets light in without interfering with the tower’s mid-century appearance. All the rooms are circular and the connection between them is ensured through stairs. There is even an unconventional terrace located on the last level. Below you have the nine floor plans for a better understanding of this original and mind-blowing project.
