Unconventional Home: Church in San Francisco Turned into Family Crib Posted: 09 Mar 2011 07:03 AM PST A few months ago we featured a post on Freshome about a stunning transformation of a Gothic church in Utrecht into a fabulous living space. Even though many of you stated that living in a former church would be a bit odd, the post was very much appreciated worldwide, which is why we decided to feature a similar project. This particular church overlooking the Mission Dolores Park in San Francisco recently suffered a sever makeover. The owner decided to keep its majestic facade and transform the interiors into a single family home which features no less than three bedrooms, a giant dining room with “surveillance balconies” and long passages for hallways. According to The Wall Street Journal, his church-home is currently inhabited by Mr. Akhavan, who is planning on selling it for $7,49 million.

Slick and Slender: MONO Sofa by LK Hjelle Posted: 09 Mar 2011 06:01 AM PST MONO Sofa is one of the latest designs completed by Anderssen & Voll for LK Hjelle. Minimalist and stylish, the product is easy to integrate in a large variety of modern interiors and it is sure to ass a charming effect. Here is a description from the designers: The slender and strict language of the sofa is like an echo of architecture. Hidden padding and a flexible back provides a high level of comfort. Mono means simple and simple is exactly what this sofa is. Its flat surfaces give it a natural expression and due to its small dimensions, it requires only minimum space. The system includes a chair, a 2-seater and a 3-seater. We have to admit the unusual design of this sofa made us curious. We can not help from wondering just how much comfort can such a slim furniture piece offer.

Architecturally Differentiated Home in an Urban Neighbourhood: The Camperdown House Posted: 09 Mar 2011 03:42 AM PST Carter Williamson Architects are the creators of this next residence located in Sydney, Australia. Although the Camperdown House on Rowley Street is located in an urban area, the family living here needed a quiet and comfortable place that would offer them a balanced life in the middle of the city without having to give up on tranquillity. Constructed by taking into account the construction policies and procedures, the architects still managed to create a much differentiated architecture from the rest of the buildings, keeping the lines modern and bold. By implementing similar scale, height and form regulations like the other houses on the street, the architects had to play with materials, shapes and lines to create a very contemporary home. Interiors feature a double-height ceiling in the kitchen, creating an airy space and many versatile nooks that have double functions. Large folding doors connect the living room on the first floor to the exterior courtyard, also offering fresh air and sunshine whenever the weather permits it.

Interesting Storage Space for Books and Films: The Swollen Wall Apartment Posted: 08 Mar 2011 09:30 AM PST Creating a personalized space inside an apartment can mean many things, depending on the inhabitant’s needs and wishes. This is why designer paulcoudamy chose to differentiate the interior design of this Parisian apartment according to the client’s love for books and films collection. He created a unique bookcase with undulating shapes and many versatile storage spaces. Names Swollen Wall Apartment, the residence features a floor to ceiling grid inserted along two main load bearing walls: “It goes above walls, through the bedroom's dressing and can either create a half area in the entrance, or spread on the corner walls of the office which accommodate a guest bedding under the elevated desk platform.” The 20 x 20 cm squared grid is perfect for pocket books and some are enlarged to fit speakers, A4 files, vases etc. Here and there, closed blocks act like enclosed storage spaces for a mini bar, a dressing or devices storage. Thanks to digital manipulation, the bookcase features swollen or cut areas, creating an undulating second wall in the apartment.

Artist’s Studio in the Shape of a Playful Wooden Treehouse Posted: 08 Mar 2011 08:23 AM PST This unusual artists’ studio was developed by studio Malcolm Fraser Architects and is located in Glen Nevis, Scotland. Deep in the forest, the intriguing unit is only accessible through a bridge and a beautiful wooden path, also built by the project team. According to Dezeen, Outlandia was developed for an art association called London Fieldworks and wishes to serve as a flexible meeting space in the forest for creative collaboration and research. Here is more information from the architects: The building itself sits out from a 45 degree slope: a treehouse, part-built out the trees cut down to form the site, entered across a bridge from the slope behind; a simple box, leaning-out into the view with big windows opening-up to it. Part of the building of it was a low-impact, eco-friendly use of material recovered from the site; part the opposite, high-impact and hairy landings of concrete, for the foundations, from a helicopter. What do you think? Is this the sort of place that could trigger ideas and creativity?
